Blick auf Moselschleife Calmont, Panoramic viewpoint at Moselle River bend in Ediger-Eller, Germany.
The Calmont viewpoint reveals a sharp river bend with steep vineyard slopes rising 380 meters above the Moselle valley below. The slopes are completely covered with vines and form a dramatic wall of terraced cultivation.
The area shows evidence of Roman settlement, with finds suggesting a sanctuary was used between the 2nd and 4th centuries. Winemaking in this region also traces back to Roman times.
Wine made here requires hand-picking grapes from the steep slopes, a practice locals continue as part of their heritage. This labor-intensive work shapes how people in the valley view their landscape and livelihood.
The viewpoint is reachable on foot through hiking paths from both Bremm and Ediger-Eller nearby. Parking is available at both towns, providing good starting points for the walk.
These slopes are among Europe's steepest vineyards, where the river's reflection creates a microclimate that helps Riesling grapes ripen. This combination of extreme terrain and natural heat is hard to find elsewhere.
