Canyon de Furnas

Canyon de Furnas is a rock formation in Capitólio characterized by steep stone walls rising dramatically above the emerald green waters of Lake Furnas. The walls create narrow stone corridors that stretch along the shoreline, with the water reflecting the rough surfaces of the surrounding cliffs.

The canyon formed after construction of the Furnas hydroelectric dam in the mid-20th century, which fundamentally changed the region. This dam project created the large reservoir and opened new possibilities for recreation throughout the area.

Lake Furnas spans over one thousand square kilometers, making it a center for water activities and boat tours that support the local economy.

The best way to experience the site is by boat tour departing from local harbors or designated access points along the shore. Visitors can also reach viewing areas along nearby roads if they prefer exploring from the land.

The water here displays a striking green color caused by minerals in the lake, which becomes especially noticeable during swimming stops on boat tours. This distinctive hue intensifies on sunny days and creates an unusual visual experience.
