Samgwangsa Temple, Buddhist temple in Busanjin-gu, South Korea
Samgwangsa Temple is a Buddhist temple in Busanjin-gu situated on Mount Baekyangsan and distinguished by a nine-story Daebo Pagoda. The pagoda rises approximately 30 meters (98 feet) tall and is crowned at its peak with a gold-plated lotus finial.
The temple was founded in 1983 and belongs to the Cheontae-jong Order, which sets it apart from most Korean temples affiliated with the Jogye-jong Order. This religious lineage continues to shape how the temple operates and what visitors encounter there.
The temple hosts annual Buddha's birthday celebrations featuring tens of thousands of colored lanterns that light up the entire grounds. These events draw visitors who want to experience the festive spirit and observe one of Buddhism's most important occasions.
The site is accessible by public buses from downtown, and taxis offer a convenient alternative for reaching the temple grounds. Wearing comfortable walking shoes is advisable since stairs lead to the main buildings and the grounds are situated on hillside terrain.
The Daebo Pagoda contains ten sacred Buddhist relics, with seven originating from Myanmar and three gifted by the Dalai Lama. This collection makes the pagoda a site of particular significance for pilgrims and visitors seeking connection with Buddhist sacred objects.
