Cimitero, Open-air museum in Verona, Italy
Cimitero is a major cemetery complex in Verona stretching along the left bank of the Adige River, divided into three main sections: Barbieri, New, and Garden Cemetery. The grounds feature monumental architecture, manicured pathways, and numerous tombs and memorials built over many generations.
The cemetery was founded in 1829 under architect Giuseppe Barbieri's direction when Verona needed a new burial ground beyond the city. Significant expansions followed in the 1930s to accommodate the city's growing population.
The cemetery displays different faiths side by side, with separate sections for Christian Evangelical, Bahai, Mormon, and Islamic burials. The monuments and memorial styles vary across these areas, reflecting each community's traditions.
The complex has three main entrances: a monumental pedestrian access in the Barbieri area, another pedestrian entry in the New section, and a vehicle entrance at the Garden area. Wear comfortable shoes and allow adequate time to explore the different sections.
Near the Garden entrance stands the Crematorium and the Church of the Holy Redeemer, serving as spiritual centers within the grounds. The New Cemetery section also houses a Military Field containing remains from World Wars I and II, honoring those who fell.
