Museo di Storia Naturale
Museo di Storia Naturale, Natural history museum in Verona, Italy
The Museo di Storia Naturale is a natural history museum in Verona with sixteen exhibition rooms housed in Palazzo Pompei, containing collections spanning botany, geology, paleontology, archaeology, prehistory, and zoology. The rooms are arranged so that visitors can explore various scientific disciplines and how they relate to one another.
Francesco Calzolari, a pharmacist from Piazza delle Erbe, began collecting medicinal herbs in the 16th century, laying the foundation for later collections. The holdings grew over generations and eventually became a major natural science museum.
The museum displays extensive collections of vertebrate and invertebrate fossils that document the evolution of plants and animals across geological time. These holdings allow visitors to understand the natural history of our planet through tangible objects.
The museum is spread across multiple rooms, so visitors should allow plenty of time to discover the different subjects. It is helpful to use a map or ask staff to understand the collections you are most interested in exploring.
The Zangheri collection in the museum consists of materials gathered by naturalist Pietro Zangheri and presents regional specimens from various scientific fields. This collection offers a special window into local natural history and the scientific work of a single researcher.
