San Biagio Chapel, Gothic chapel in Verona, Italy
The San Biagio Chapel is housed within the Santi Nazaro e Celso church complex and displays Gothic architecture with pointed arches and ribbed vaults throughout its interior. The altar contains a painting by Francesco Bonsignori that shows the Virgin and Child in Glory alongside Saints Blaise, Sebastian, and Juliana.
The chapel was begun in March 1488 under the direction of Beltrame di Valsolda and completed in 1497 to house the relics of Saint Blaise. This building period occurred when Verona was under Venetian rule and many religious construction projects were being supported.
The chapel displays frescoes depicting stories from Saint Blaise's life painted by Giovanni Maria Falconetto and other artists of his time. These religious images have drawn visitors for centuries who wish to understand the devotion and artistic expression of that era.
The chapel is located in central Verona and is easily reachable on foot from the city's main attractions. Visitors should keep in mind that this chapel is part of a larger church complex and visiting hours depend on the church's schedule.
Saint Blaise holds a central position in this chapel space, serving not only as its namesake but as the focal point of both artistic and religious devotion shown through the artworks and relics. The combination of relic veneration and high-quality Renaissance artworks makes this a place where quiet contemplation becomes natural.
