Mel's Drive-In, American diner in Santa Monica, United States
Mel's Drive-in is an American diner in Santa Monica featuring bright neon signs, traditional counter seating, and large windows that display the classic 1950s Googie style on Lincoln Boulevard. The building stands out for its original architectural details and open design along the street.
The building opened in 1959 as the Penguin Coffee Shop, designed by architects Armet & Davis in the Googie style. After extensive restoration in 2016, it took its current name and had its historical significance fully restored.
The place shows mid-century American diner culture through its preserved terrazzo floors, leather counter stools, and a traditional menu served all day.
The diner sits on Lincoln Boulevard in Santa Monica and is open from morning until late evening daily. It is easy to walk to and has parking available nearby.
The building still displays its original penguin-shaped sign from its earlier days as a coffee shop. The Santa Monica Conservancy recognized this preservation work in 2019 with an award for maintaining the original Googie architecture.
