Serpent Mound State Memorial, Ancient ceremonial mound in Adams County, United States.

The 1,348-foot prehistoric earthwork follows the contours of a plateau above Ohio Brush Creek, forming the shape of an uncoiling serpent.

Archaeological research indicates the mound was constructed by the Fort Ancient culture around 1120 CE, with evidence of earlier Adena settlements nearby.

The three coils of the serpent structure correspond to solar events, including summer solstice, equinox, and winter solstice sunrise positions.

The site includes a museum presenting exhibits about Native American cultures, archaeological findings, and regional history from 800 BCE through 1750 CE.

Scientific measurements confirm this structure as the largest documented surviving prehistoric effigy mound on Earth, extending over a quarter mile.
