Chaparral Prairie State Nature Preserve, Protected natural area in Adams County, Ohio, United States.
Chaparral Prairie State Nature Preserve is a 130-acre protected area in Adams County featuring post oak openings, blackjack oak stands, and cedar barren sections. Numerous native prairie grasses and wildflowers grow throughout this mixed habitat.
The area was designated as a nature preserve in 1985 and became the first natural area acquired by Ohio through tax check-off funding. Previous to protection, the land had been used for agriculture.
The landscape is maintained through controlled burns, continuing land management methods that have shaped this region for generations. Visitors can observe how this practice preserves the open plant communities and woodland mosaic.
Visitors can explore 2 miles of marked trails including Bald Hill Trail, Cedar Barren Trail, and Prairie View Trail through different habitat types. The trails offer varying difficulty levels and are accessible across different seasons.
The preserve hosts Ohio's largest population of rattlesnake-master plants with roughly 10,000 specimens throughout the grounds. These plants attract numerous pollinator species and play a key role in the local food web.
