The Cantona ruins cover 12 square kilometers with 500 cobblestone pathways connecting 3000 residential areas, 24 ball courts, and multiple stone temples.
Between 600 and 1000 CE, Cantona functioned as a major trading center with 80,000 inhabitants before its abandonment around 1050 CE.
The inhabitants of Cantona specialized in obsidian trading, extracting the black volcanic glass from nearby mountains for tools and ceremonial objects.
The archaeological zone opens Tuesday through Saturday from 10 AM to 5 PM, with an entrance fee of 85 Mexican pesos for visitors.
The structures in Cantona were constructed using precisely cut stones arranged without mortar, demonstrating advanced architectural techniques of ancient Mesoamerica.
