Kennedy Space Center, Space exploration museum in Brevard County, United States
Kennedy Space Center is a space exploration museum in Brevard County, Florida, located on Merritt Island along the Atlantic coast. The facility includes several halls with rockets, capsules, spacesuits, and vehicles that flew on actual missions into orbit.
The visitor facility opened in 1967 as the United States sent its first astronauts to the Moon, giving the public access to part of an active spaceport. All crewed American launches into space took place from these pads, from the earliest capsules through the reusable shuttle program.
Every rocket and capsule in the Rocket Garden represents a specific program from the early years of human spaceflight and shows the evolution from simple capsules to complex systems. Visitors can walk beneath the towering rockets and see how the designs grew larger as missions reached farther into space.
Bus tours travel to historic launch pads and the large assembly building, where windows reveal active spaceflight infrastructure. The complex spreads out over a wide area, so plan several hours to see the main exhibitions.
One of the massive crawler transporters that roll rockets to the pad sits near the entrance, allowing visitors to experience the size of these vehicles. These machines weigh thousands of tons and move along wide tracks at barely more than one kilometer per hour (about half a mile per hour).
