Hauteville House
Hauteville House is a museum housed in the former residence of French writer Victor Hugo on Guernsey. The building displays his private rooms with original furnishings, artwork, and personal belongings collected during his years in exile on the island.
Hugo lived in this house from 1855 to 1870 and wrote some of his major works here after leaving France due to political conflict. Following his death, the residence was preserved and eventually opened to the public as a memorial to his life and literary contributions.
The house is small with narrow stairs, so comfortable footwear is recommended and visitors with mobility concerns should inquire ahead of time. Entry is typically managed to keep numbers low, meaning you can move through the rooms at your own pace without feeling rushed or crowded.
Hugo personally designed many of the rooms with elaborate wall decorations and furnishings that reflect his artistic vision. This hands-on creativity in the decoration offers insight into his artistic thinking beyond just his writing.
