Cabbages & Condoms, Thai restaurant in Khlong Toei, Thailand
Cabbages & Condoms is a Thai restaurant in the Khlong Toei area of Bangkok, serving regional dishes from across Thailand in a space decorated with art installations made from contraceptives. The restaurant is run by the Population and Community Development Association, a nonprofit that supports health education across Thailand.
The restaurant was founded in the 1970s by Mechai Viravaidya, an activist who wanted to bring family planning into everyday conversation in Thailand. From the start, the venue was designed as a public conversation tool, not just a place to eat.
The dining room is decorated with art made from condoms, from wall pieces to full figures, all visible while eating. This setting makes conversations about health education feel natural rather than forced, turning a meal into something more than just food.
The restaurant is on Sukhumvit Soi 12, a short walk from Asok BTS station, which makes it straightforward to reach from most parts of the city. Indoor and outdoor seating is available, so booking ahead is a good idea for evening visits.
At the end of a meal, guests receive condoms instead of mints, a deliberate gesture that has become the restaurant's signature touch. All profits go directly to fund the work of the Population and Community Development Association rather than to private owners.
