The wooden and tin structure stands 65 feet high, 60 feet long, and 18 feet wide, weighing 90 tons with a spiral staircase inside.
James Lafferty constructed this architectural novelty in 1881 to promote real estate sales, obtaining a patent for animal-shaped buildings in 1882.
The structure transformed from an elephant bazaar to a tavern, restaurant, and office space before becoming a preserved historical landmark in 1976.
Tours occur every 30 minutes, with admission prices of $8.50 for adults and $4 for children between ages 3 and 12.
The structure contains living quarters that became available through Airbnb in 2020, allowing guests to sleep inside a National Historic Landmark.
