Boardwalk Hall Auditorium Organ, Pipe organ in Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, New Jersey, US
The Midmer-Losh Orgel is a massive pipe organ installed in Boardwalk Hall with over 33,000 pipes arranged throughout multiple chambers. The entire instrument spans eight separate rooms and weighs roughly 150 tons.
The instrument was built between 1929 and 1932, with many pipes manufactured in a dedicated on-site workshop during its construction. This period coincided with major economic changes unfolding across the country.
The instrument comes alive during regular concerts that show how its different sounds work together to create music.
Visitors can see the organ chambers from inside and learn about how the instrument works by joining a guided tour. The best time to visit is on one of the regular concert days to experience the full sound.
A special register called the Grand Ophicleide produces sound at extreme volume comparable to a jet engine at full throttle. This register is so powerful it remains unmatched in the history of musical instruments.
