Boardwalk Hall, Multi-purpose entertainment hall along Atlantic City Boardwalk, United States.
Boardwalk Hall is a large multi-purpose venue in Atlantic City, United States, standing right on the city's famous wooden boardwalk. The massive indoor space is covered by a barrel-vault ceiling that rises 137 feet (42 meters) high, while the hall itself measures 456 by 310 feet (139 by 94 meters) and has no supporting columns.
The hall opened in 1929 at a cost of 15 million dollars and served as the city's main convention center until 1997. A new meeting facility was then built, and the building shifted its focus to entertainment and sports.
The name refers to the famous wooden promenade that runs right past the entrance and connects the building with the beach. Visitors can still see the Art Deco details in the entrance halls that recall the golden age of American seaside resorts.
The venue seats 10,500 spectators for ice hockey matches and can expand to 14,770 seats for concerts. Visitors will find the building right on the boardwalk between Mississippi Avenue and Florida Avenue.
In 1932 the massive Midmer-Losh pipe organ was installed here, containing more than 33,000 pipes and making it the largest musical instrument in the world. Many of the pipes have been restored in recent decades so the organ can be played again at special events.
