Marven Gardens, Historic district in Margate City, United States.
Marven Gardens is a historic residential district in Margate City, New Jersey, about 3 kilometers (two miles) south of Atlantic City. The area covers 16 acres and holds more than one hundred houses designed mainly in Tudor Revival, Mission Revival, and Dutch Colonial styles.
The streets were built mainly between 1920 and 1930, when many coastal communities in New Jersey were expanding. The architecture firm Pedrick & Sons designed most of the buildings and shaped the appearance of the whole development.
The name comes from three early property developers with the surname Marven who planned these streets along the coast. Today yellow street signs with small decorative houses recall the neighborhood's playful connection to popular culture.
The area lies between Ventnor Avenue, Winchester Avenue, Fredericksburg Avenue, and Brunswick Avenue and is accessible through coastal roads. A walk through the quiet streets takes about thirty minutes and allows a view of the different houses.
Parker Brothers included the district on the Monopoly board game but accidentally spelled the name as Marvin Gardens with an i instead of an e. This spelling variant became the most widely known representation of the place and appears on millions of board games worldwide.
