Museo Amparo, Art museum in historic center, Puebla, Mexico.
Museo Amparo is an art museum in the historic center of Puebla housed within two restored colonial buildings. The exhibition spaces span multiple floors and contain fourteen galleries displaying both permanent collections and temporary shows.
The museum was founded in 1991 and occupies a former hospital building from 1534 along with an 18th-century structure that once served as a women's college. These two historic buildings were connected to create the current institution.
The collection displays art spanning from pre-Hispanic times through the present day, showing how different artistic traditions coexist and have evolved alongside each other. You can observe how religious beliefs, daily life, and social changes appear reflected in the objects and paintings on view.
The museum provides information stations throughout the building to help visitors navigate and understand the collections. The galleries are spread across multiple floors, so starting with a map or exploring the rooms systematically makes the visit easier.
The museum holds a throne from the late Classic Period discovered in Rio Usumacinta, Chiapas, representing a rare example of pre-Hispanic royal furniture. This piece is seldom displayed in other collections and is worth seeking out during your visit.
