The museum occupies two renovated colonial buildings, featuring comprehensive exhibition spaces across multiple floors with permanent and temporary galleries.
Founded in 1991 by Manuel Espinoza Yglesias, the museum complex includes a former 1534 hospital building and an 18th-century structure that served as a women's college.
The permanent collection presents Mexican art evolution through pre-Hispanic artifacts, colonial pieces, and contemporary works from numerous civilizations including Maya and Aztec.
Visitors can access guided tours in four languages through computer stations distributed across fourteen exhibition halls containing the permanent collections.
The museum collection includes a throne from the late Classic Period, discovered in Rio Usumacinta, Chiapas, which represents a central piece of pre-Hispanic art.
