Cafe Kacao, Latin American restaurant in Oklahoma City, United States
Cafe Kacao is a restaurant on North Classen Boulevard in Oklahoma City that serves Central American breakfast and lunch dishes. The menu includes homemade pupusas, chilaquiles, and fried plantains, alongside coffee imported from Guatemala.
The restaurant was opened by Guatemalan immigrants who brought their family recipes to Oklahoma City and introduced Central American breakfast traditions to the local food scene. Those same recipes, passed down through generations, still form the foundation of what is served today.
A large mural by local artist Carlos Barboza covers one wall of the dining room, showing scenes of coffee farming and food preparation in Latin America. The painting sets the tone for the whole space and gives first-time visitors an immediate sense of where the cooking comes from.
The cafe is open for breakfast and lunch most days of the week, and arriving early gives you the best chance of finding your preferred dish. Seating can fill up fast, especially on weekends, so going on a weekday morning is a good option.
Although the restaurant has Guatemalan roots, some of its specialty dishes mix ingredients and techniques from Guatemala, Mexico, and El Salvador together on a single plate. The result is something that does not exist in exactly this form in any of those three countries.
