Oklahoma City, Capital city in Great Plains, United States.
Oklahoma City is the capital of its namesake state in the center of the Great Plains, spreading across several counties with wide residential and commercial districts. The city follows a grid pattern with broad avenues and numerous public green spaces distributed among the neighborhoods.
The founding took place in April 1889, when thousands of settlers staked out parcels within hours after unassigned territory opened. Over the following decades, the city grew into a regional center for agriculture and later for the oil industry.
Rodeos and livestock auctions take place year-round, drawing spectators and participants from across the state. Restaurants serve barbecue in the local tradition, often accompanied by live country music on weekends.
The road network connects several major highways that intersect downtown and make orientation easier. The city is spread out, so a car is helpful for visits beyond the downtown area.
A network of underground passages and covered bridges runs through the business district, allowing pedestrians to cover longer distances sheltered from the weather. These passages connect office buildings, shops, and public facilities.
