Negombo Beach

Negombo Beach is a sandy shore on the western coast of Sri Lanka in the Gampaha District, stretching with pale sand and lined with coconut palms. The waterfront is dominated by fishing activity, with wooden boats and nets defining the landscape throughout the day.

This port emerged as a trading hub during colonial rule, with Portuguese, Dutch, and British presence leaving marks on its harbor infrastructure. The town became a maritime crossroads that shaped economic activity for centuries.

The beach sits about 15 minutes from Bandaranaike International Airport, making it convenient for travelers beginning or ending their trip. Early morning visits reward visitors with the busiest fishing activity and the most interesting scenes.

Two distinct fish markets operate alongside each other, with the second one beyond the lagoon bridge offering front-row views of boats arriving with their catch. This split arrangement reflects how completely fishing dominates the town's economy.
