Kalu Yala, Sustainable town and campsite in Panamá District, Panama.
Kalu Yala is a sustainable settlement and campsite nestled in a rainforest valley near Panama City, covering hundreds of acres. The site is bounded by multiple rivers and features accommodations and work spaces designed with environmental principles in mind.
The project started in 2008 when a developer purchased rainforest land and later transformed it into a community focused on sustainable living. The vision evolved from the desire to create a working model that balances development with environmental protection.
The institute draws participants from around the world who come to learn and live together using sustainable practices. Visitors experience daily life where environmental responsibility shapes how people work, eat, and build community.
Access requires traveling to a base camp first, then completing the final journey either on foot or by specialized vehicle. Visitors should prepare for terrain that ranges from paths to streams, and bring sturdy footwear suitable for rainforest conditions.
The four rivers surrounding the property offer rafting opportunities during much of the year while maintaining the local ecosystem's health. These waterways create natural boundaries that support wildlife and make the setting distinctly connected to water-based life.
