Tünektepe Gondola, gondola lift in Antalya, Turkey
Tünektepe Gondola is a cable car in the Konyaaltı district that extends about 1,700 meters and carries visitors up the mountain. The system consists of 36 small cabins with approximately 8 seats each, gliding smoothly along the cable and offering views of the city, sea, and surrounding mountains during the nine-minute ride.
Plans for a cable car to reach the mountain began in the 1970s and were first formalized in 1986. After delays and financing issues, the city took over the project in 2014 and opened the gondola to the public in February 2017.
The name Tünektepe comes from Turkish and means "pointed mountain." The gondola has become a place where locals and visitors gather to view the city from above and take a break from the activity below.
The station is easily reached from the city center by bus or taxi, and visiting in late afternoon provides good light for the ride and views. Parking is available at the base station, and the top has a prayer room, restrooms, and a cafe, making a stay comfortable.
On April 12, 2024, the gondola experienced a serious accident when a support tower was damaged and a cabin fell, killing one passenger and injuring seven others. Rescue teams conducted a 23-hour operation to free all trapped passengers, after which extensive safety improvements were implemented.
