Antalya Museum, National archaeological museum in Konyaaltı, Turkey
Antalya Museum is an archaeological museum in Konyaaltı displaying works spanning from prehistoric times to the Byzantine period. Its thirteen exhibition galleries showcase sculptures, sarcophagi, coins, and artifacts from ancient Mediterranean civilizations.
The museum was founded in 1922 and expanded its collection through excavations of ancient Mediterranean civilizations including Lycian, Roman, and Byzantine settlements. These digs allowed it to assemble extensive holdings spanning multiple periods.
The museum displays the Weary Heracles statue, a remarkable work reunited in 2011 when its upper section returned from abroad to rejoin the lower portion discovered decades earlier. This reunion allows visitors to see the complete ancient sculpture as it was originally intended.
Visitors can come year-round, with opening hours varying by season, and the entrance is conveniently located. It is best to allow enough time to explore the numerous galleries at a comfortable pace.
The Elmalı Coin collection holds rare silver pieces dating from the 5th century BCE, representing one of the most complete ancient coin collections in Turkey. This assemblage offers rare insights into the trade practices and economic life of the ancient world.
