Alto de Coloane, Mountain peak in Coloane, Macau
Alto de Coloane is the highest point in Macau, a forested hill on Coloane Island rising to 172 meters above sea level. The summit is reached by marked walking paths through Coloane Park, and from the top there are open views over nearby islands and the sea.
Coloane Island remained largely separate from the rest of Macau's development for centuries, which is why the hill stayed forested and sparsely inhabited for so long. The protected park around the summit was established in the 20th century to keep the area from being built over.
At the summit stands a large white statue of A-Ma, the patron goddess of sailors, whose name inspired the name Macau itself. Visitors still light incense sticks there today, making the top of the hill an active place of worship rather than just a viewpoint.
The summit can be reached on foot from the park area near Coloane Village, and buses run regularly from the main parts of Macau to get there. The walk up is moderate and manageable for most visitors, though sturdy shoes are a good idea given the forest paths.
Although Macau is known for its casinos, Alto de Coloane is one of the very few places in the territory where you can stand inside a real forest, far from any building. A second peak, barely shorter than the main one, sits just nearby but goes largely unnoticed by visitors.
