Capela de São Francisco Xavier, Catholic chapel in Coloane Village, Macau
Capela de São Francisco Xavier is a white and cream-colored chapel with oval windows, a bell tower, and a central nave flanked by two side chambers in southwestern Coloane. The building's simple facade sits in a quiet residential area surrounded by traditional village homes.
The chapel was built in 1928 under Bishop José da Costa Nunes and originally housed the remains of Catholic priests executed in Nagasaki in 1597. This period marked a time when the Portuguese community in Macau sought to honor their religious heritage.
The interior displays an image of Saint Francis Xavier and a Chinese-style depiction of the Virgin Mary, showing how Eastern and Western religious traditions blend together in this space. This fusion appears in both the decorations and how the chapel is arranged.
Visitors can reach the chapel by bus routes 15, 21A, 25, 26, 26A, 50, or N3, which stop at the Villa De Coloane stations. The location in a residential area makes it easy to walk around and explore the surrounding village.
A memorial stone decorated with cannonballs and iron chains stands in front of the chapel, marking the Portuguese victory over pirates in 1910. This unusual monument combines religious and military history in a single location.
