Montecasino Bird Gardens

Montecasino Bird Gardens is a sanctuary in Johannesburg housing over 60 bird species alongside small mammals and reptiles spread across distinct areas and walking routes. Multiple zones focus on different animal groups and their habitats.

The sanctuary opened in 2000 as part of the Montecasino entertainment complex and became the first bird facility of its scale in Johannesburg. Its establishment represented a major step in local bird conservation efforts.

Daily flight demonstrations at 11:00 and 15:00 present South African birds of prey alongside international species, reflecting local and global avian traditions.

The gardens welcome visitors Wednesday through Sunday, with early mornings offering the best time to see animals active and alert. Walking paths throughout the site are well-maintained and easy to navigate between different zones.

The gardens host one of the largest private collections of South African cycads in the world, with hundreds of plants spanning multiple rare species. Plant enthusiasts come from far and wide to view these botanical specimens.
