Liliesleaf Farm, Historical resistance site in Rivonia, South Africa
Liliesleaf Farm is a building complex in Rivonia with restored structures, original meeting rooms, and exhibition spaces. The rooms display documents and objects that document the resistance against apartheid.
The property was a key center for resistance activities against the apartheid system in the early 1960s. A police raid in July 1963 led to the arrest of ANC leaders and the subsequent Rivonia Trial.
The site holds collections of resistance artifacts, including the Freedom Charter and personal belongings of activists who worked here. These objects tell the stories of people who expressed their hope for change within these walls.
Access is through guided tours that last about two hours and provide an overview of all buildings and exhibitions. Reservations are required to plan your visit.
Nelson Mandela lived here under the assumed name David Motsamayi and coordinated resistance activities from this location. His time at the farm was kept secret from authorities.
