Riverbend Crocodile Farm
Riverbend Crocodile Farm is a breeding facility in Southbroom on South Africa's south coast, home to more than 200 adult Nile crocodiles and reptiles of varying ages. The property features landscaped enclosures with water features designed to simulate the natural habitats where these animals thrive.
The farm opened in 1983 as South Africa's first commercial crocodile breeding operation. Over the decades it evolved from a breeding facility into an educational destination, expanding to include snake demonstrations and cultural spaces that now attract thousands of visitors annually.
The farm has become a gathering place where visitors connect with crocodiles and snakes in their naturalistic settings. Through demonstrations and education, it fosters understanding that these reptiles play important roles in local ecosystems rather than being simply dangerous creatures.
The farm operates daily from 9 am to 4 pm, with feeding demonstrations on Sunday and Wednesday afternoons and regular snake presentations. It is advisable to call ahead to confirm exact times for feeding shows and hatchings, especially during summer months when these events are more frequent.
The property operates an adjoining art gallery and wine shop showcasing South African artists and regional wine estates. This combination allows visitors to explore local art and taste wines alongside their experience with the reptiles, creating a more well-rounded cultural visit.
