Shymkent Zoo is a recreation area divided into separate sections for mammals, birds, reptiles, and aquatic animals from Kazakhstan and around the world. The layout guides visitors through different zones where they can observe the various species on display.

The zoo was established in 1997 and has grown substantially since its opening. Over the decades, it expanded from a small collection into a larger facility housing many species.

The zoo serves as a place where visitors of all ages learn about wildlife and environmental protection. Families and school groups regularly spend time here to observe animals and understand their behaviors.

Visitors can walk through the grounds and find signage throughout the facility to help with navigation. It is best to wear comfortable shoes and allow enough time to explore all sections at a leisurely pace.

The facility runs specialized breeding programs for endangered species native to Central Asia that are difficult to find in the wild. These programs work to maintain and stabilize populations of rare animals that might otherwise disappear.
