Giraffes, Zoo giraffe enclosure in Phường Bến Nghé, Vietnam
Giraffes is a zoo enclosure in Phường Bến Nghé, Vietnam, that houses several adult specimens with their spotted coats. The animals move between feeding areas and shade spots where they chew on branches and leaves from special racks.
The enclosure opened in the early 2000s when the zoo added African species to its program. The first specimens came from a breeding program in Southeast Asia and formed the basis for the current group.
The name Hươu cao cổ means long-necked deer in direct translation, showing how Vietnamese speakers describe these African animals. Visitors often see children laughing at the sight and talking with their parents about the long tongue.
Visitors can watch the animals from several viewing points distributed around the enclosure. Morning hours usually bring more activity as they move between feeding stations more often.
The animals use their tongue, nearly 50 cm (20 in) long, to grab leaves from elevated feeding stations positioned so visitors can watch this behavior closely. On hot days they often stand close together in the shade and move only their heads to eat.
