Amazonas Park Crete, Zoo in Neapoli, Greece.
Amazonas Park Crete is a zoo in the Neapoli area of northern Crete, specializing in tropical birds and exotic animals. The grounds include outdoor sections designed to resemble natural habitats, with enclosures for parrots, monkeys, and other species from tropical regions.
The park was founded in 2011 through a partnership between a Swiss animal facility and local investors on the island. This collaboration made it possible to bring tropical species to Crete, where the mild climate supports their care year-round.
The park places a strong focus on close contact between visitors and birds, which is uncommon in a typical European zoo. Some parrot species can be observed at very short range, as they are kept in open sections where people can walk among them.
The park sits inland in northern Crete and is easiest to reach by rental car or private vehicle. Most of the visit takes place outdoors on uneven paths, so sturdy footwear is a good idea.
The park runs an active breeding program for parrot species that are at risk of disappearing from the wild. The animals raised here are intended to one day help restore populations in their original habitats.
