Al Naslaa, rock formation in Saudi Arabia

Al Naslaa is a sandstone rock formation in Tayma Oasis with two large upright blocks resting on natural pedestals and separated by a perfectly straight vertical gap. The stones stand about 20 feet (6 meters) tall with flat faces and ancient petroglyphs visible on their surfaces.

The formation dates back approximately 4,000 years, showing that this area has been visited by people since ancient times. The petroglyphs carved into the stones document human presence and activity across millennia.

The name Al Naslaa means "the split," referring to the distinctive gap between the stones. The petroglyphs on the surface depict figures like horse handlers and other images, showing that this place has held meaning for people for thousands of years.

This remote desert location requires good preparation with plenty of water and sun protection, as the sun is intense and heat can be significant throughout the day. Engaging a local guide is recommended, as they know the terrain and can provide context about the site.

The two stones are perfectly balanced on natural pedestals formed by wind erosion, giving them a mushroom-like appearance. This pedestal erosion process continues today, slowly reshaping the landscape around the formation.
