Upside down house, Inverted villa in Koh Kaew, Thailand
The Upside Down House is a three-story villa in Koh Kaew where all furniture and objects are mounted on the ceiling, creating the effect of walking on an inverted floor. Every room follows Western interior design principles with everything reversed from the typical orientation.
The villa opened in 2014 as Thailand's first building designed for visitors to walk on inverted surfaces. The project combined local construction methods with international creative concepts.
The space was created as an experimental area where visitors question their everyday understanding of interior layouts and daily environments. It appeals to people because it plays with how we perceive the spaces where we live and work.
You can visit during daytime hours and will have access to all three floors to explore the different rooms at your own pace. Wearing comfortable shoes is recommended since walking on inverted surfaces requires some balance and adjustment.
Behind the structure lies a maze garden that visitors often explore after walking through the inverted rooms inside. This outdoor attraction extends the playful experience beyond the building itself.
