Duftgarten, Fragrant garden in Litzelstetten, Germany
The Duftgarten is a garden in Litzelstetten, a village near Konstanz in southern Germany, designed around aromatic and touch-friendly plants. It is divided into several sections, each built around raised beds that bring plants up to a comfortable height for visitors.
The garden was established as part of local efforts to keep knowledge of medicinal and fragrant plants alive in the Lake Constance region. It draws on a tradition of herb cultivation that has existed in this part of southern Germany since the medieval period.
The name "Duftgarten" means "fragrance garden" in German, and that word shapes everything about how the space is set up. Visitors are encouraged to touch the leaves, crush herbs between their fingers, and follow their nose from one bed to the next.
The paths through the garden are wide and level, making it easy to move around without difficulty, including for visitors with reduced mobility. The space is compact enough to walk through at a relaxed pace without feeling rushed.
Although the garden appears to be designed for sighted visitors, it was originally planned with blind and visually impaired people in mind. Several of the labels found around the garden are written in Braille, which many visitors walk past without noticing.
