Gath & Chaves, defunct department store in Argentina
Gath & Chaves was a department store in central Buenos Aires, located on Florida Street at the corner of Cangallo Street, selling clothing, furniture, toys, and household goods across several floors. The building had a European-inspired facade with marble details, colored windows, and large display windows facing one of the city's busiest pedestrian streets.
The store was founded in 1883 by Lorenzo Chaves and Alfred Gath, who started by selling English fabrics before growing into one of Argentina's largest retail chains. In 1922, London-based Harrods acquired it, and the store continued operating until 1974, after which the building became a bank.
The Florida Street location made Gath & Chaves a natural meeting point for porteños, the local name for Buenos Aires residents, who would arrange to meet under its arcades or in its café. Shopping here carried a social weight that went beyond buying goods, and visits were often dressed-up occasions.
The building stands at the corner of Florida Street and Cangallo Street in downtown Buenos Aires, easy to reach on foot from most central points. Florida Street is a pedestrian zone, so visitors can look at the facade comfortably while walking through the area.
The company founded a sports club for its employees and their families in 1918, with football pitches and tennis courts. That club is still active today, making it one of the few surviving traces of the original business.
