HMAS Goolgwai, Naval wreck site near Malabar, Australia
The HMAS Goolgwai is a naval wreck resting in the waters off Boora Point in New South Wales, measuring approximately 126 feet in length. The vessel sank and now rests on the seabed as a reminder of maritime activity along this stretch of coastline.
The ship was originally built in 1919 as SS Almeria in Ontario before being converted for Royal Australian Navy service as a minesweeper during World War II. After the war ended, it continued operations until it sank in 1955.
The wreck reflects the maritime connections that shaped this coastline and how naval vessels were central to Australia's coastal defense. Visitors sense this connection when looking out toward the water where the ship now rests.
The wreck is located in offshore waters, so access is only possible from the water or from certain coastal points depending on tidal conditions. The best time to visit is during calm seas and clear weather when visibility is better.
In 1955, dense fog pushed the vessel onto the rocks at Boora Point and it sank quickly beneath heavy seas. This sudden loss made it one of the most dramatic wrecks along this coastline.
