SS Wanganui, Iron brigantine steamer in New South Wales, Australia.

The SS Wanganui was an iron-hulled steamer with twin boilers and screw propulsion, built to handle demanding sea routes. The vessel carried cargo, livestock, and passengers between ports while maintaining reliable service through its steam engine technology.

Built in 1863 by Gourlay Brothers in Scotland, the vessel initially served New Zealand trade routes. It was relocated to Australian waters in 1880 and continued operations for many years afterward.

The vessel was operated by the Wanganui Steam Navigation Company and served as a crucial link in regional commerce and military operations. People passing by the ship today can sense the importance it once held in connecting distant communities by sea.

The ship is now accessible as a historic site where visitors can explore steam technology from the 1800s. You should prepare for narrow passages and stairs typical of period vessels, which are part of the authentic experience.

The vessel proved its superiority in a race against the Claud Hamilton, a larger competitor of its time. Despite being the smaller ship, it outperformed its rival in this memorable contest.
