SS Wanganui, Iron brigantine steamer in New South Wales, Australia.

The SS Wanganui featured twin boilers and screw propulsion, achieving speeds of 10 knots through its two 25 horsepower compound steam engines.

Built in Scotland by Gourlay Brothers in 1863 for £9000, the vessel served New Zealand routes until transferring to Australian waters in 1880.

The vessel transported troops, supplies, and prisoners during the New Zealand Wars while operating under the Wanganui Steam Navigation Company.

The ship specialized in carrying produce, goods, and cattle between different ports, completing 29 trips in just six months during its peak operation.

In 1866, despite competing against the larger Claud Hamilton vessel, the SS Wanganui demonstrated superior performance and won their racing contest.
