Al Baleed Archeological Park, archaeological site in Oman
Al Baleed Archaeological Park is an archaeological site on the coast near Salalah, in Oman's Dhofar Governorate, preserving the stone remains of a medieval port city that once included houses, a mosque, and other structures. The grounds border reed beds and wetlands that frame the ruins and give a sense of what the coastal setting once looked like.
The city, known in Arabic as Zafar, rose as a major port from around the 6th century onward and linked the Arabian Peninsula with India, Africa, and China through maritime trade. It gradually declined and was eventually abandoned, leaving its stone structures buried until systematic excavations began in the 20th century.
The ruins show the layout of an old port city, with the outlines of houses and a mosque still readable on the ground. Walking the site gives a sense of how merchants and their families organized daily life in a place built around trade.
The site can be explored on foot or by electric cart, which is helpful given the size of the grounds. Visiting early in the morning or late in the afternoon is more comfortable, as midday heat can make walking through the open ruins tiring.
Among the objects uncovered here are decorated tiles that show clear influences from distant regions, pointing to trade routes that went well beyond the nearest ports. These finds are displayed in an on-site museum, meaning visitors can see the ruins and the artifacts in a single visit without leaving the grounds.
