Ras Al Jinz Turtle Nature Reserve, Sea turtle nesting reserve in Sur, Oman

Ras Al Jinz is a sea turtle nesting reserve located on the coastline near Sur, featuring several kilometers of sandy beaches used by green sea turtles for breeding. The site functions as a natural hatchery where eggs are laid in the sand and young turtles emerge to reach the ocean.

The reserve was established as a protected area in 1996 to safeguard the nesting grounds of endangered green sea turtles in the Arabian Peninsula. This designation marked a turning point in regional conservation efforts for marine species.

The place holds deep meaning for local communities as a symbol of marine conservation and environmental responsibility in the region. Visitors who come at night witness firsthand how people work together to protect these ancient creatures and their breeding grounds.

Visitors can join guided walks at 8:30 PM or 5:00 AM to observe nesting activity, with the busiest period running from May through September. Wearing comfortable walking shoes and bringing water is advisable, as walks cover sandy terrain and take place during warm hours.

A scientific research center operates within the reserve and tracks the annual migration patterns of five different turtle species traveling across the Indian Ocean. This ongoing monitoring provides valuable data that helps protect these animals throughout their entire life cycle.
