Regional theatre of Oran, Theatre building in Oran, Algeria
Théâtre régional d'Oran is a large masonry theatre building set on Place du 1er Novembre 1954 in central Oran, Algeria. Its front shows a statue with a muse and a cithara, with domed roofs and a decorated railing, while inside a 600-seat hall spreads across a ground floor, balconies and private boxes.
Built as an opera house around 1883 or 1905, it opened to the public in December 1907. After Algeria's independence it passed into state hands and changed names several times before becoming the regional theatre in 1972 or 1973.
The building carries the name of Abdelkader Alloula, a local theatre figure, and this keeps his memory present in the everyday life of the city. Around the front, the square remains a meeting point where people gather in the evening before or after a performance, giving the place a familiar social role.
The theatre is easy to reach on foot from surrounding streets, and its central position places it near other well-known spots. Check ahead for performances, because the schedule changes with the season and popular shows can fill quickly.
The stage is built in an Italian style and still has a musicians' pit that is no longer used. Two other muses flank the central statue on the façade, creating a deep perspective that many passersby miss from the square.
