Aktau mountains

The Aktau Mountains extend for 30 kilometers along the Ili River, presenting sedimentary layers in shades of white, red, blue, and yellow.

The mountain formation dates back 400 million years when the Tethys Ocean covered the region, creating layers of deposits over millions of years.

Fossils of prehistoric rhinoceros, crocodiles, and turtles found in the mountains provide evidence of ancient life forms from 25-30 million years ago.

Visitors can access the mountains through Kapchagai highway, with a 2-3 hour drive from Basshy village, where the national park office is located.

The mountains display mineral-rich sedimentary layers that form conical structures with ochre bases, red centers, and white or blue summits.
