Playa de las Américas, Coastal resort beach in Arona, Spain
Playa de las Américas is a stretch of coastline on the southern side of Tenerife with light-colored sand and several swimming zones protected by breakwaters. The water remains mostly calm, and the beaches connect directly to walkways lined with shops and restaurants.
Construction of a resort began here in the 1960s, turning a sparsely populated coastal area into a large holiday zone. Development continued to expand north and south over the following decades.
The name refers to the entire resort area, shaped by international visitors throughout the year. Along the waterfront, guests sit in cafés, children build sandcastles, and families stroll beneath palm trees.
Sun loungers and umbrellas can be rented at several points along the shore. Water sports such as jet skiing are available on-site, and showers as well as restrooms are located at short intervals.
Much of the sand was brought by ship from the Sahara Desert. The offshore breakwaters ensure that swimmers find sheltered areas even when wind picks up.
