Crystal Mountains, Mountain range in western Gabon.
The Crystal Mountains is a mountain range with multiple peaks below 1000 meters, featuring steep slopes that drop sharply toward the surrounding valleys. Water flows constantly down the mountainsides, creating streams and waterfalls that shape the landscape along the Atlantic coast.
The area received protection in 2002 through the creation of two linked parks called Mbe and Mt Sene. This conservation action was taken to safeguard the exceptional plant diversity found within this mountain range.
Local communities in the valleys of the Crystal Mountains maintain strong connections to the land through traditional resource management practices.
The highest peak, Mont Mbilan, stands at 925 meters and draws visitors who want to trek to the top. The terrain is steep and wet, so sturdy footwear and rain protection are essential for exploring.
Two frog species, Leptopelis crystallinoron and Leptodactylodon stevarti, exist nowhere else on Earth. These animals live only in the forests and streams of these mountains.
