Monument des Martyrs

The Monument des Martyrs is a memorial with mirrored glass elements and geometric forms in the Ouaga 2000 district. Four concrete pillars rise approximately 47 meters high and create a distinctive point on the city's skyline.

The monument was built in 2002 following major political changes in Burkina Faso. It serves as a tribute to those who lost their lives during revolutionary upheavals in the nation.

Two gourd shapes within the structure reflect Burkinabe traditions, one facing downward to honor fallen heroes and the other pointing upward to represent national unity.

The site sits in an open field with little shade, making it uncomfortable during intense heat. Visit early in the morning or late afternoon, and bring plenty of water for your time there.

An observation platform allows views across the city while revealing how the geometric forms appear differently from various angles. The mirrored surfaces create a conversation between the structure and its surroundings that shifts depending on where you stand.
