Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park
Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park, Coastal defense fort in Key West, United States.
Fort Zachary Taylor encompasses 87 acres of land with thick limestone walls, gun ports, and red brick corridors near the southern tip of Key West.
Construction of the fort began in 1845 as part of a coastal defense system, employing numerous workers to build fortifications against potential naval attacks.
The fort contains the largest collection of Civil War artillery pieces in North America, discovered during excavations conducted by dedicated volunteers in 1968.
Visitors can access the fort and beach daily from 8 AM until sunset, with guided tours available to explore the military architecture and defense systems.
The foundation combines oolitic limestone and granite materials, supporting two tiers of casemates designed for strategic weapon placement along the coast.
