Floating homes viewpoint

The viewpoint overlooks roughly 400 floating homes spread across five residential marinas in Richardson Bay. The homes cluster around different harbor areas, and you can view them from several spots along the waterfront path.

The floating home community started after the 1906 earthquake when displaced people built water-based homes using materials from closed shipyards. What began as a temporary solution gradually became a permanent residential community.

The homes attract artists, musicians, and writers who have made this place a center for creative work. You can sense the artistic spirit that permeates the community when you walk along the docks.

You can observe the homes from designated viewing areas along the waterfront path, which offers several vantage points. The best time to visit is during clear weather when you have good visibility across the water.

Each floating home rises and falls with the tides, held in place by concrete pilings, wood, or fiberglass anchors. This design allows the homes to remain permanently on the water without needing any motors to move them.
