Benjamin and Hilarita Lyford House
Benjamin and Hilarita Lyford House, Second Empire residence in Tiburon, California.
The Benjamin and Hilarita Lyford House features a mansard roof, decorative elements, and architectural details characteristic of Second Empire design patterns.
Built in 1876, this Victorian house belonged to Civil War doctor Benjamin Lyford and his wife Hilarita Reed, daughter of Irish landowner John Reed.
The residence represents the architectural preferences of wealthy California residents during the late nineteenth century, incorporating European design influences.
The house stands at 376 Greenwood Beach Road in Tiburon, functioning as part of the Richardson Bay Audubon Center and Sanctuary.
In December 1957, the entire structure was transported by barge across Richardson Bay to prevent its demolition and preserve its historical value.
