Balta di Stringa waterfalls, Waterfall in Iliochori, Greece.
Balta di Stringa consists of three cascading waterfalls formed by the Kryopotamos River at an elevation of about 780 meters. The highest drop reaches approximately 25 meters and creates natural pools nestled among rock formations.
The name comes from the Vlach language meaning 'the pool of the scream', derived from a legend about a woman whose cry was said to echo from here all the way to Iliochori village. This story remains part of the local mountain heritage.
The site preserves traditional Vlach folklore and represents the authentic mountain culture of the Zagori region, where local myths and oral traditions continue to shape the identity of the area.
The path to the waterfalls starts from Iliochori village square and is well marked throughout. The walk is relatively easy and typically takes about 30 minutes to complete the 1,050-meter route.
During winter months the waterfalls transform into spectacular ice formations when temperatures drop and freeze the cascading water. The trail also passes the historic stone bridge of Petsos, constructed in 1887.
