Statua dell'Abbondanza, Statue in the Boboli Gardens, Florence, Italy
The Statua dell'Abbondanza is a bronze and marble statue placed in the Boboli Gardens in Florence, Italy. It shows a standing female figure about 13 feet (4 meters) tall, holding a cornucopia, with carefully carved drapery that gives the figure a sense of movement.
The sculpture was begun from a design by Giambologna and completed by Pietro Tacca, who worked on it between 1600 and 1636. It was placed in its current position in the Boboli Gardens in 1637.
The statue shows a female figure holding a cornucopia, a horn overflowing with grain and fruit, which was a common symbol of wealth and generosity in Medici Florence. Visitors today can still read this symbolism clearly in the figure's pose and the objects she carries.
The statue is inside the Boboli Gardens, which are part of the Uffizi Galleries complex, so entry requires a ticket for the gardens. Visiting during the morning gives you the best light on the sculpture and the paths are less crowded at that time.
The sculpture was originally meant to stand on top of a column in a Florence city square, not inside a garden. The change of setting completely altered the way the work was intended to be seen, from a public monument visible across an open piazza to a garden feature viewed up close.
